Ready for You

My wife Amy and I faced a long, difficult road to start our family. In the midst of it all, she wrote a beautiful poem to our first child, that we hadn’t met yet. I eventually set it to music — and wrote this song.

August 22 is known as National Rainbow Baby Day. It’s a day to celebrate babies who were born after a loss — due to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death.

Amy and I faced a long, difficult journey to parenthood, that we have both shared publicly. Between infertility and struggling to conceive — to the permanent damage and surgeries that resulted from my body being ravaged by rheumatoid arthritis while trying to start a family — the birth of our first daughter, Lola, truly was a miracle to us.

To celebrate her first Mother’s Day, my wife Amy shared a poem she had written years before… after our initial loss:

I’m Ready for You

It hasn’t always been this way

But I realized today

I’m ready for you

I want to see your smiles

Overcome all your trials

For the rest of my miles

I’m ready for you

I want to wipe all your tears

Calm all your fears

For the rest of my years

I’m ready for you

I see your face

Feel your embrace

But, for now, it’s just a trace

I’m ready for you

I want you in my arms

Shelter you from harms

Succumb to your charms

I’m ready for you

For worse or for better

Turn my back on you never

Give you my forever

I’m ready for you

You’re just in my imagination

But I pray for your creation

Making my dream a realization

I’m ready for you

When Lola was born, I took the poem and set it to music as a gift for Amy, to celebrate our first Christmas as a family of three — that would one day, by the grace of God, become a “party of five.”

I’ve never shared the song publicly before now — if I could, I’d like to dedicate it to anyone who’s ever gone through or is currently going through something similar — and hope it will inspire you to keep the faith, and never give up. What a blessing it is to be a father — and to share my gratitude the best way I know how. 🙏❤️
